How I use Text-to-image AI in my videogame Design Classes

As a video game design teacher, I'm always looking for ways to spark creativity and inspiration in my students. One tool that has been particularly helpful is the use of text-to-image AI tools such as Mid Journey.

With these tools, my students can generate ideas for characters, backgrounds, concept art, and mockups for UI, loading screens, and background art quickly and easily. This can be especially helpful in the early ideation phases of a project when students may be struggling to come up with concepts or need a little nudge in a new direction.

We also use text-to-image AI tools to create modular design parts that can be remixed into ships and game levels. This helps to speed up the design process and allows students to focus on other aspects of their projects.

One of the most significant benefits of using AI tools in this way is the ability to break down the barriers to entry for students who may not have traditional art skills. With text-to-image AI tools, anyone can create compelling visual assets, even if they don't have a background in art or design.

Of course, AI tools are not a replacement for traditional art skills, but they can be a useful tool to complement those skills and help students generate new ideas quickly.

In addition to Mid Journey, we also use other text-to-image AI tools such as DALL-E, ImageFX and Deep Dream Generator. We integrate these tools into our workflow seamlessly and find that they enhance the design process for our video game projects.

Overall, text-to-image AI tools have become a valuable resource for our video game design class. By leveraging the power of AI, we can generate new ideas quickly, break down barriers to entry, and enhance the design process for our projects.

By integrating ChatGPT and AI-powered illustration tools into our Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) creative writing sessions, we've embarked on a magical journey, transforming imaginative narratives into vivid, tangible experiences.

Our adventure begins with descriptive writing exercises. Students are tasked with creating characters, settings, and scenarios fit for a D&D universe. But there’s a twist – each description is brought to life through AI-generated illustrations, using ChatGPT4.

Students type their character descriptions into ChatGPT4, and the AI responds with stunning, illustrative interpretations. This visual feedback excites the students, giving them a tangible connection to their creations. Understanding the terminology associated with different photography perspectives can greatly enhance your ability to generate compelling and unique images. In this tutorial, we'll delve into the concept of size and explore various camera angles that can shape the subject of your photographs. So, let's dive in and discover how to bring your creative vision to life!

Understanding Size:

When it comes to photography, size plays a crucial role in capturing the essence of your subject. To simplify this concept, imagine your subject as the main focus of your image. Let's take a look at the visual representation below to grasp this idea:

Camera Angles for Different Perspectives:

Now that we have a grasp on the importance of size, let's explore different camera angles that can be used to shape the perspective of your subject. With these angles, you can evoke specific emotions, emphasize different features, and create captivating compositions.

1. Wide-Angle Shot or Wide-Angle:

This angle positions the camera far away from the subject, capturing a broader view.

2. Far-Shot or Far-Angle:

Similar to the wide-angle shot, the camera is far away from the subject, but positioned either above or below it.

3. Aerial View, Aerial Perspective, Satellite View, or Drone Footage:

This angle places the camera high above the subject, providing a bird's-eye view.

4. Medium-Shot or Medium-Shot Angle:

The camera is positioned low, looking up at the subject, offering a balanced perspective.

Emulating the style commonly seen in magazines, this photo type often features eye-level or wide-angle shots with even lighting and impeccable photographic qualities.

3. Photographer's Name:

By referencing a specific photographer's name, your image will inherit their signature compositions and film qualities, adding a touch of their artistic style to your creation.

4. Photographed by + Media Source:

Utilizing this prompt format, such as "Photographed by Sports Illustrated or Vogue," will mimic the camera angles and framing commonly found in that specific media source, capturing the essence of their visual style.

5. NatGeo:

Ideal for action shots with a touch of drama, NatGeo prompts generate images that tell a story, often featuring a blurred background to enhance the dynamic nature of the subject.

6. Product Photography:

This photo type is perfect for creating images that resemble professionally shot product advertisements, showcasing objects in a visually appealing manner.

7. Directed by + Artist or Director's Name:

By referencing a renowned artist or director, such as "Directed by Peter Jackson or Stanley Kubrick," your image will reflect their distinct camera angles and framing style.

Camera Attributes - Shaping the Visual Experience:

Understanding camera attributes is essential for refining the details and aesthetics of your generated images. Let's take a closer look at these important camera settings:

1. Camera Model:

Specify the camera model you want to emulate, such as "Sony a7R IV camera, Nikon D850 DSLR, Canon EOS R5, Hasselblad X2D 100C," or even vintage models like Polaroid or Autochrome. Each camera model imparts its unique visual characteristics to your image.

2. Focal Length and Lens Type:

Experiment with different focal lengths to control the zoom level of your image. Lower values like 18mm and 28mm are suitable for capturing landscapes, while higher values like 50mm and above are ideal for portraits. 3. Depth of Field and Aperture:

Adjusting the depth of field allows you to control the sharpness and blurriness in your images. Use keywords like "narrow/shallow depth of field" or "wide/deep depth of field" to specify the desired effect. Experiment with aperture values like f/1.4, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, and more to fine-tune the focus range in your image.

4. Shutter Speed:

To capture the desired motion effect, specify the shutter speed in your prompt. Low shutter speeds like 1/4s or 1/60s introduce motion blur, while higher values like 1/120s freeze fast-moving objects. Explore different shutter speeds to achieve your desired visual outcome.

5. ISO Value:

Controlling the ISO value influences the brightness and exposure of your image. Specify values such as 50, 100, 200, 400, and higher to adjust the brightness level. Each ISO value creates a unique visual atmosphere, so feel free to experiment with different settings.

6. Lighting Type:

Add keywords like "natural light, dreamlike lighting, dramatic lighting, soft sunlight, golden light, film light, sunlight, back lighting, bottom lighting, top lighting, hard lighting, contrasty lighting, neon lighting," and more to evoke specific lighting moods and enhance the overall ambiance of your image.

Writing the Correct Prompt:

To maximize your creative potential with Midjourney, follow this template as a best practice:

/imagine <subject> <environment> <color> <mood> <composition>

For example: "/imagine a low-angle shot of a dalmatian dog playing at a beach shot on a Canon EOS R5."

Remember to experiment with different combinations of subject, environment, color, mood, and composition to achieve your desired visual outcome.

Using Negative Prompts:

Midjourney also supports negative prompts using the "--no" command. Although the exact behavior may vary, you can use it to eliminate certain colors or elements from your generated images. Incorporate "--no red" or similar parameters at the end of your prompt to refine your results further.


Midjourney for Design, Layouts, and entrepreneurship

I have found that Mid Journey and other text-to-image AI tools are incredibly useful for generating ideas for company logos, t-shirt designs, corporate branding, layouts for websites, and other marketing materials. These tools allow students to quickly and easily create high-quality images without needing any graphic design experience. They can then learn to communicate and discuss these images and talk with design students to use as a starting point for their work. 

One of the primary ways we use these AI tools is for logo design. In the past, students would spend hours sketching out ideas and trying to create the perfect logo. Now, with text-to-image AI tools, they can simply enter the name of their company and a few descriptive words, and the AI will generate dozens of logo options to choose from. They then meet with their design students to develop them into a fully finished logo and brand. What used to be weeks of work, is now an afternoon or weekend assignment.

We also use these tools for designing t-shirts and other merchandise. With just a few clicks, students can create a design that incorporates their company logo and other branding elements. They can experiment with different colors, fonts, and layouts until they find the perfect combination.

In addition to logos and merchandise, we use text-to-image AI tools for creating layouts for websites and other marketing materials. Students can enter text describing their product or service, and the AI will generate images that match the description. This allows them to quickly create mock-ups for ads, brochures, and other marketing materials.

We use these AI tools for creating modular design parts that can be remixed into other designs. For example, students might create a set of icons or illustrations that can be used across different marketing materials or a series of backgrounds that can be used for different web pages.

Overall, text-to-image AI tools like Mid Journey have been an invaluable resource for my entrepreneurship class. They allow students to quickly and easily create high-quality designs without needing any design experience, freeing up more time for them to focus on other aspects of their business and for learning how to communicate and develop good business and working relationships.
